Easy Choco Lava Kozhukattai Recipe: A Fun Chocolate Treat for Kids
Sep 26, 2026
Kozhukattai is a soft, steamed sweet. It is made from rice flour. It is a favourite South Indian sweet. We make it a lot during Ganesh Chaturthi. The normal filling is coconut and jaggery. It is soft. It is healthy too, because we steam it, not fry it.
Now let's add a fun twist. This is Choco Lava Kozhukattai. From outside, it looks just like a normal kozhukattai. But cut it open when it is warm. Soft melted chocolate flows out, like lava. Kids love this surprise.
This is a fun recipe to make with your children. Kids can help make the dough soft. Kids can help shape each piece too. You just do the hot steaming part. With Anil Kozhukattai Flour, the outer part is very easy to make. You do not need to soak rice. You do not need to grind flour. Just open the pack and start. Let's make this fun sweet together.

How to Make Choco Lava Kozhukattai
Step 1: Make the dough
Bring the water to a boil in a pan. Add a pinch of salt and oil, then gradually add Anil Kozhukattai Flour while stirring continuously. Mix well until the flour absorbs the water and forms a soft dough. Turn off the heat and let it cool slightly until it is warm enough to handle.

Step 2: Knead the dough
Once the dough is warm enough to touch, knead it with your hands. Rub a little oil on your palms first. Knead till the dough turns soft and smooth, just like play dough.

Step 3: Make a chocolate dough too
Take a part of the soft dough. Add cocoa powder to it. Knead it well till the whole dough turns brown, like chocolate. Now you have two doughs, one white, one chocolate brown.

Step 4: Get the mould ready
Take the small steel kozhukattai mould. Rub a little oil inside it, so the dough does not stick.

Step 5: Shape the kozhukattai using the mould
Press a small ball of dough into the mould. Push it evenly on the sides. Now place a few small pieces of chocolate in the middle. Cover it with a little more dough on top. Close the mould tightly and press.

Step 6: Open the mould
Open the mould carefully. You will see a pretty kozhukattai shape, with lines on the sides, just like the traditional one. Do this for both the white dough and the chocolate dough.

Step 7: Steam it
Rub oil on an idli plate or steamer plate. Place all the kozhukattai on it, white and brown together. Steam them till the outer layer turns shiny.

Step 8: The chocolate lava surprise
Take one out and let it cool for a minute. Then break it open in front of the kids. Watch the soft melted chocolate flow out slowly, like lava! This is the fun part everyone waits for.

Tips for the Perfect Chocolate Lava Centre
● Chill the filling: A thick, chilled chocolate filling is easier to place inside the dough.
● Do not overfill: About 1 teaspoon of filling is enough for a medium-sized kozhukattai.
● Seal the dough properly: Check the covering for cracks or open edges before steaming.
● Keep the dough soft: If the dough becomes dry while shaping, cover it with a clean, damp cloth.
● Do not make the outer layer too thin: A slightly thicker covering helps hold the chocolate filling securely.
● Serve warm: The chocolate centre is at its best when served shortly after steaming.
Mistakes to Avoid
● Using soft, runny chocolate filling: This makes shaping messy. Chill the chocolate first, until it turns thick.
● Making the bottom too thin: A thin bottom cannot hold the chocolate well. Keep it a little thick.
● Steaming for too long: This turns the soft chocolate hard. Stick to 8 to 10 minutes only.
● Adding too much filling: This can make the kozhukattai burst open. Use just a small spoon of filling.
● Shaping with dry hands: Dry hands make the dough stick and tear. Keep your hands a little oily.
● Serving it cold: The chocolate stays hard when cold. Always serve it warm.
